Saraswati - The Goddess of Intelligence
Saraswati or Sarasvati, also known as Bharati (eloquence), Shatarupa (existence), Vedamata ('mother of the Vedas'), Brahmi, Sarada, Vagisvari, and Putkari, is the Hindu goddess of learning, wisdom, music, aesthetics, and speech. Saraswati is identified as the inventor of Sanskrit and, appropriately, gives Ganesha the gifts of pen and inks with which he wrote the great epic Mahabharata. The wife of Brahma, she is also a patron of the arts and sciences and worshipped as the goddess of learning in Jainism and several Buddhist sects.
Saraswati's name means 'elegant', 'flowing', and 'watery' No wonder her name is used as one of the rivers flowing from the Himalaya. Thus this sacred river too got personified into a deity.
Saraswati Idols
Goddess Saraswati is depicted as a graceful young woman with white skin wearing a white sari (which symbolizes purity) with a blue border. Not being concerned with worldly goods she rarely wears jewellery. Often a crescent is placed on her forehead and she is shown seated on a lotus flower or riding her vehicle - either a swan or a goose. Frequently represented in figure sculptures on temples, Saraswati is often depicted with four arms, each holding a symbolic object. While the left hands carry palm-leaf manuscript and ritual water vessel, one of the right hands hold a white lotus, and the other performing the gift-giving gesture. The vina in the Goddess’ hand symbolizes the gift of music she gave to humanity.
